Brussels based dancer Amina Iddrisu Jobo and Ghanaian musician Babs Jobo, her father, created a mesmerizing dance act where they explore who they are, to themselves and to eachother. A voyage through roots and prospects. A conversation between father and daughter, between music and dance, reinventing language into a timeless expression, going beyond the boundaries of tradition, culture, gender and generations.
For this choreography Amina contacted us to (co-)create the outfits.
The inspiration base came from the traditional Northern Ghanaian Takai dance of the dagombas (https://youtu.be/_CulBIvQEm0?feature=shared). For the dance act they wanted a contemporary version of the traditional wear, crossed with the YU.ME BXL collection style and philosophy. The idea was: no boundaries :) .
Babs brought back some magnificent Northern Kente from Ghana, a handwoven fabric made by locals, in the most sustainable and artisanal way. This already leaned perfectly into the ideals and foundations of this brand. Amina and Babs each chose their fabric, and my assignment was to take it from there, focussing on a danceproof piece for Amina, accentuating waistline and legs and introducing a mix of traditional, classic and YU.ME BXL. For Babs we needed a vest in Takai and kimo inspired style, flexible to move, dance and play the djembe. And so we went for it, and hereby the results!
